Schools Half Marathon expands into West Sussex and Kent
It has been confirmed that Schools Half Marathon, part of Schools Running Movement by UK Run Events, will expand into West Sussex and Kent for the school year 2019/20.
The announcement comes after a highly successful first year for Schools Half Marathon in Brighton & Hove and East Sussex, which culminated with a fantastic event at Withdean Stadium on 22nd June 2019. The event saw hundreds of school pupils from local primary schools complete the final 1.1 mile of their cumulative half marathon in front of teachers, family and friends, and there is already plenty of interest and excitement for next year’s event.
Sarah Watkins, Team Leader for Schools Half Marathon Brighton & Hove and East Sussex, will be managing Schools Half Marathon West Sussex and Schools Half Marathon Kent. The addition of the two neighbouring counties means that the south east corner of England is now covered and hundreds of school pupils across Sussex and Kent will be able to take part in Schools Half Marathon for the upcoming school year. All primary schools within these counties will be receiving information about the events from the autumn, which is ideal timing for those that wish to put their PE and Sport Premium towards it.
Schools Half Marathon is an inspiring and potentially life-changing movement that encourages school age children to develop healthy habits to exercise regularly. It is fully inclusive and non-competitive, with the aim of helping youngsters of all abilities to get outside and active whilst achieving something as significant as a half marathon.
Pupils run the initial 12 miles at school over the course of a term or half term, receiving rewards along the way, before completing the final 1.1 mile at an organised event. On race day the youngsters receive a full race experience, including race bibs, a marshalled 1.1-mile route, music, commentator and a finish line gantry. They are cheered the whole way round and the atmosphere is fantastic as they cross the line and are awarded with a large bespoke medal to celebrate their achievement.
Schools Half Marathon is part of Schools Running Movement by UK Run Events. Events in 2019 have included Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin, Brighton & Hove and Stockport, and many more locations have been confirmed across the UK for the school year 2019/20.
Schools Half Marathon Director Joe Williams commented, “We are thrilled to expand Schools Half Marathon into West Sussex and Kent, following on from a fantastic first year in Brighton & Hove and East Sussex. This is a wonderful opportunity for school pupils across the South East to take part in this nationwide movement and work towards something truly worthwhile with their friends. West Sussex and Kent are two of many new areas we are introducing for 2019/20 and it is definitely an exciting time as we work towards making a difference to the next generation.”
Sarah Watkins added, “I am delighted to take on Schools Half Marathon in West Sussex and Kent in addition to East Sussex. Seeing so many young runners achieve their half marathon in Brighton this year was incredible, and I have received such lovely feedback from teachers and parents who have commented on a real boost to confidence and sense of pride among those who took part. I have two children myself and know first-hand what a difference sport can make to young lives. I am really excited to start working with schools across Sussex and Kent and to help many more pupils get involved in Schools Half Marathon next year.”
Schools Half Marathon Brighton & Hove and East Sussex will take place at Withdean Stadium on Saturday 20th June 2020.
Schools Half Marathon Kent will take place at The Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford on Friday 19th June 2020.
Schools Half Marathon West Sussex will take place at Worthing Leisure Centre athletics track on Thursday 18th June 2020.
